The Ideas to Images Story
Part Three: Escape from L.A.
In 1991, in response to worsening urban decay around Los Angeles, Gary uprooted his family and business and moved to beautiful Santa Rosa, about 60 miles north of
San Francisco. Two years later Ideas to Images reached a juncture that Gary had dreaded for years: There was simply too much work, under too much deadline pressure, to be produced through the usual network of freelancers. There was no choice but to hire a full-time employee.
But who? Back in the old days at i/e, inc., when book pages were assembled by pasteup artists, Gary had trained a Northridge art major in the finer points of book layout. This young man had, like Gary, transferred these skills to the Macintosh. After i/e he worked in electronic book production at Windsor Publications and had freelanced for Ideas to Images through the years. His name was
Robaire Ream. After Windsor, Robaire had landed a dream job drawing animated cartoons for Warner Bros., but had been laid off in the recurring boom/bust cycle of all animation studios. Sorry to leave Taz-Mania and the Animaniacs behind but eager to escape L.A., Robaire and his family moved to Santa Rosa in 1993.
