C A R T O O N I L L U S T R A T I O NInternet Literacy
Often an author will provide a simple sketch to indicate what a figure is about, as shown in our
Birth of an Illustration demonstration, but forInternet Literacy Fred T. Hofstetter didn't want to limit our creativity. He provided only a figure caption and the instruction "McGraw will draw this."Now, Irwin/McGraw-Hill may be a leading publisher of textbooks for higher education, but they don't often take up the corporate sketch pad to render didactic illustrations for their books. That task fell to Ideas to Images, along with the design of the cover, the interior, and the associated
Web site. Rather than produce yet another collection of text boxes and arrows to illustrate computer concepts, we decided on a lighter touch and used cartoons. You'll find the author's original caption under each cartoon reproduced here.
