Odalisque Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres
(1780-1867)
According to H. W. Janson in his History of Art (1969, Prentice Hall), "[Ingres] always held that drawing was superior to painting, yet a canvas such as his Odalisque reveals an exquisite sense of color; instead of merely tinting his design, he sets off the petal-smooth limbs of this Oriental Venus ("odalisque" is aTurkish word for a harem slave girl) with a dazzling array of rich tones and textures."
