The Tale of the Computer-Generated Set

Herb's PhotoIn Video Basics 2, the biggest challenge to our ability to pull rabbits out of hats was Herb's request for a computer-generated set incorporating real props. It was the last figure in the book, and also the last piece still marked TK (to come) in our art list.

DTP JournalI had a photo of some chairs in a studio, but no idea where to acquire the virtual background. The answer arrived one day in our mailbox. The cover story of the National Association of Desktop Publishers Journal was on 3-D graphics, and the illustration looked like it might be just what we were looking for. I contacted the artist, Joseph Kelter, via e-mail at BadCat Design, Inc., and explained my problem. After a few more rounds of electronic correspondence, we decided that he could provide something within my limited budget by simply removing the arch from the original scene and adding more floor tiles, then rerendering. He uploaded the finished file to our FTP site, I grabbed it, and married the two images in Photoshop. Voila!
